Hey,

I’ve noticed our users jump on us and many other groups for a long while now. Some are nice and as such we respond nicely to them. On the other hand, you get people like this guy here (e-mail link removed) who should be (censored). Allow me to share with you what I’m talking about…

> hey

> i just wanted to point out that you should be more aware of your

The above is an actual email from the person noted which shows how (censored) can be towards us for providing a FREE fansub.

We use British English. We have done so and will continue to do so as do most fansub groups out there. Just because we use an s instead of using a z doesn’t make our fansubs any less in quality and most fans barely notice it and even if they do it is simply blown off because they ‘realise’ that we are using British English.

(Censored paragraph)

Thanks,
– Silence.

Additional Information:

Just some additional spelling information for your general knowledge if you’re wondering about spelling differences between British and American spellings. Note that the large majority of countries in the world spell using the British system. American spellings are only used in the states, the Phillippines, Japan (they don’t even speak English though) and a handful of other countries associated with the states. Because I myself am not American, and neither is the Baka-Wolf owner, Leginag, we tend to spell it in the British spelling system because we were brought up spelling that way.

Here are a few examples of things which you might think are mistakes, but really aren’t, if you’re unsure of the differences.

– Programme vs Program. Programme = itenerary, schedule. Program = computer programs only.

– Colour, valour, armour, etc. Spelt with an additional ‘u’.

– Centre, litre, theatre, metre. Spelt with ‘re’ for all words of French origin.

– Gramme, tonne. Additional ‘me’/’ne’.

– Meter. Used for things like ‘parking meters’ only as opposed to the SI unit, metre.

– Enrol, fulfil, travel, cancel. Spelt with one ‘l’ in their plain form.

– Enrolling, travelled, cancelled. Spelt with two ‘l’s when in other forms.

– Storey. The number of floors, levels in a building.

– Catalogue, dialogue. Spelt with an additional ‘ue’.

– Spelt, learnt, leapt, dealt. These are often the prefered past tense forms instead of ending with ‘ed’ as they are pronounced that way.

– Defence. Spelt with a ‘c’ because it’s a noun and must follow the ‘c’ to the noun rule. E.g Advice, device as opposed to the verb form of advise and devise. And opposed to the adjective version also using an ‘s’ in defensive, advisable, etc.

– Aesthetics, Encyclopaedia, diarrhoea.

– Doughnuts.

Wow, that’s quite a list and that’s still hardly complete. Hope that’s helpful.

xess

P.S. Note, I no longer handle mail for m.3.3.w and passed this responsibility to silence a while back. Sometimes, handling the mail can be very stressful as I often get a lot of silly mail. It’s difficult to be tech support for non-paying customers, lol. Either way, I agree with Lonyo that this mail is not rude in any way, just plain ignorant. However, I thought that I’d take this opportunity to point out the differences in spelling and properly inform everyone that the spelling in True Tears and H2O will be using the British system.

Anyway, we’re always open to feedback and suggestions. However, I’d like to kindly ask mailers to do a bit of research on their own before contacting us. Obviously, we won’t spell something wrong 50 times in a row. Must be a reason behind it, right? Thank you again for your support.

lol thanks, that made my day. i really think people should consider what they rant about before they mail in to fan groups, minor changes in spelling on words are to be expected due to regional accents and word play it doesnt make them any less valid than any other unless ofc it is totaly abv that the spelling has no meaning and thus incorrect.

Thanks for the lesson. I did not know any of that and I am grateful. In regards to what lonyo said I believe people need to be careful of how they use there voice in what they write. The original poster was abrupt in his pointing out of what he believed were mistakes. For example “NOT realisecrealiZe”. The poster could also have been more tactful with his choice of phrasing, as it was rude to suggest that a dictionary was necessary for the sub team.

What a typical comment (read: bash) thread.

The post was benign, the heads handled it. Usage of British English in favor of American English was clarified. True Tears was beautiful, Myself; Yourself was memorable. m.3.3.w/Baka-Wolf still rocks.

So why do we have all these politically motivated garbage lines like “Yeah, typical american foisting his (or her) views on people…”? Or the not-so-aptly put “lol..Americansc i wont say anymore than that”?

I agree with Lonyo. Unlike most of the comments, the mail does not seem rude to me, nor does his pointing out ‘mistakes’ using capitals (aww c’mon. This is rude only if you want to perceive as such). And while he was ceratinly mistaken, is it really the kind of mistake that should be punished that way? Someone here noted that even teachers make that mistake sometimes, although I agree this is not much of a point.

And opinions like “it’s for free so don’t complain” have been discussed many times over already, and I personally don’t agree with it. I believe everyone has the right to voice his honest opinion.

Ach, I get it all the time on the internet… some smartass saying that I’ve mis-spelt a word when in actual fact I haven’t. Being Scottish I use the (Check: Original) British-English spellings.

Defence/Defense being something that I get corrected with on a regular basis. Personally, for Defence and other similar words, I find no point in it ending in “E” if you’re just going to swap the “C” with an “S”, after all, the “E” there is what changes the simple “C” into an “S” in the first place.

Sorry if it seemed whiny, I saw an Oppurtunity and I seized it ^^

Man, what’s with all the America hate? So we spell stuff differently… it’s not like those of us growing up here chose to learn American English over British English, just as those of you growing up in other countries did not chose to learn British English over American English. Just because one guy didn’t know of the differences between the languages and pointed it out doesn’t justify sweeping generalizations of Americans being stupid.

And most of the bashing directed towards him is also unnecessary. He was wrong, and that’s all there should be to it. Of course, reading his latest comments will make me regret saying this (using different spellings does NOT count as having different “beliefs”) but whatever.

In conclusion, let’s just all be friends, m’kay?

  41. Where did I say American English is bad? I just prefer Brittish English myself, as I’ve learned that in school.

  45. Talon87

I enjoyed your guys’ fansub of Myself;Yourself and I agree with the others that this person was either being a prat or else he just didn’t realize that there are people in this world who don’t speak American English, and that “correctness” is relative.

Still, I’m not writing in reply to that so much as to this quote which rubbed me the wrong way: “We use British English. We have done so and will continue to do so as do most fansub groups out there.”

First of all, this kind of claim is probably best avoided. Without the proper data to back up the claim (and such data would be a chore to provide), it’s not much better than trolling.

Second, in the four years I’ve watched English-subbed anime, I’ve seen very few groups stationed in the UK and even fewer who use British English over American English. This isn’t because one is better than the other, etc. etc., that’s not my point. My point is, I question the validity of the claim being made here, the claim that British English is “the English of choice for most fansub groups.” I think a quick look around the ‘net would suggest otherwise.

And finally — people who claim British English is “more correct” than American English are just as bad as the Americans who do the opposite. Both sublanguages have made spelling and grammatical deviations since the late 1600s, so it’s not like British English is any closer to the original “English English” than is American English. Both forms are deviants, and it’s up to the speaker to decide which he prefers.

Sorry if this is tl;dr, but you guys said you wanted honest feedback, so here it is. (1) I love your subs, (2) the guy who wrote you in was naive or trying to aggravate you, but (3) you could have handled it a little better instead of (by my observations, falsely) claiming that British English is what most fansubs use and trying to legitimize your position that way. It should have been good enough to tell him, “It’s our fansub group and we’ll fansub things as we see fit. Thank you for your concerns, though.”

Wow, such fun drama. Well, personally, I couldn’t really care much less about that e-mail. Doesn’t bother me at all. It’s actually kinda funny. However, as for Silence, receiving a mail like this every week can quickly build up the stress levels. At least it makes the site more fun to read?

  47. Let me explain something. I am an American. I’m not exactly PROUD of my country, or the random fools that are in it. I’m not out to bash the country I was born and raised in. My only issue was the repeating issue of having people come to us with these error reports noting every single British English spelling error is an error. It’s not just this single person, I simply used him as an example due to yes, how rude he was.

    > you may need to keep a dictionary on you if english is not your first
    > language. these do not apply, but sometimes words can be spelled
    > differently by changing one letter.

That is the rude comment in the email. To tell us to have a dictionary on hand was simply uncalled for. I see it every other week to a weekly basis. Sometimes we’re lucky and people just don’t say anything and it’s nice.

I personally use American English. I, when acting as an editor on project _______ deal with the British English and have had several creative battles with our TLer xess. Still, we leave the British English in there because that is just what we provide and it is the native English that our key staff members use.

If you were really bothered by this, then you were looking more deeply into this matter than I was and I’ve been accused of seriously taking this way too far. It’s not exactly a matter of this one incident. As I said, this is fueled by this being an ongoing issue for this group.

My hopes are this and simply this: I want this to serve as a message to those who feel we’re repeating the same “mistakes” and “errors” in each and every release we do using British English. I ask for understanding and for everyone to simply accept that this is what we offer, we offer speed and quality in our releases with encoding that’ll make your girlfriends giggle with dirty thoughts.

Going to leave it at that and move on to less frustrating things. Like hentai. HENTAI FTW! :X!

I am capable of spelling in both varities, and the subbing program we use contains dictionaries for both varities too. It just so happens that I conciously chose to use British spellings at first and it has just been that way ever since.

Himesama-goyoujin and Rosario + Vampire(I think) uses the American variety. So, it just depends on who happens to be TLing or editing the projects.

you know what…maybe i should leave. however i just wanted to make sure my point got across and not to hurt anyone and maybe get it fixed. although i realize what i’ve done made a lot of boiling water and excess teeth grinding and hissing, i am cool with these subs, ok? aside from the spelling, they’re pretty accurate (about 98.9%), and that’s good enough for me, i guess. i just have asperger’s and all, so i kinda have the urges to make sure everything is right, and nothing is crooked, and nothing is wrong. besides, i did not KNOW this was a british subs as i get most of my subs from american countries seeing as america is about the second largest importer of anime on the planet, so i was unaware of any cultural differences in the first place. and should i be able to sit down to learn japanese i will consider coming back asking m.3.3.w to let me help out from time to time. so therefore i shall leave this board and never come back to this website except to see if releases have been made. thus, sorry for all of this trouble, and goodbye.

This argument, though most people would think that they’re right & the other side is wrong, should just be treated as a matter of preference. Just because one version is the standard in one area, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s wrong or insignificant. I personally prefer American English (less u’s, less paper, less trees cut down ->good 4 the environment LOL), but that’s just because that’s what I’ve grown accustomed to. (I’m not American, BTW) There’s no need to bash one vs the other. Neither do I see the point in bugging m33w about choosing British English because, again, that’s what they’ve grown up with.

If people are so truly irked by the British spelling style, then:
    1) wait for the h264 v
    2) demux (remove) the subtitles using mkvextract
    3) open using notepad
    4) cut & paste to check for spelling with a spell checking program
    5) cut & paste edited text & save subtitle files
    6) remux (add) the subtitles using mkvmerge

Now that you know the process of tweaking subtitles, I hope people get a sense of appreciation as to how complicated just a small portion of the process of fansubbing really is since it doesn’t even include translating, timing, typesetting, etc.

m33w has been very good at taking constructive criticism compared to other fansubs that would bite the heads off or ban people for just pointing a correction or bugging for the next episode. Just be respectful when asking for corrections & leave m33w to what they do best: fansubbing in a quick & efficient way. They have enough problems to deal with & complain about something you can do yourself isn’t helping.

Man how about to let people known in the firt part of the episode that it will be translated in British english so that they know which dictionary to use. Now that I think about the whole matter, m.3.3.w is at fault for not making that clear.

Now, I like to tell if anyone who hasen’t realised it yet that I’m only making a joke (just in case people don’t get the joke, this is translated from spanish so maybe something was lost in the translation). m.3.3.w. you guys keep the good work and I’m going to see the new episode of H2O with the british encyclopedia at hand in case I don’t get it. See ya and good work.

This is why I always thought there should be an IQ requirement in order to download subbed anime.

Honestly, even if there MIGHT be a few mistakes, I couldn’t care less. I mean, you do an awesome job, choose always the best anime and you work hard. I respect m33w fansubs more than any other fansub.

Just forget about this fucktard, we all love you ๐Ÿ˜€

PS: Honestly I think you should make people register and then pass an IQ test before they can activate their login ID and stuff, that would be pretty funny.

He isn’t bad, and only said to get the dictionary as an aid to an ESL person….. He is just american, we get a certain amount of leeway, or else you will get nukes and burger king. You don’t want burger king, now do you?

Anyway, I would be sad to see this guy go truthfully, no matter how much I suspect that the …. was not the original sender of the email……

  63. lol !! ^_^ nice thread… its my first post here and i don’t make comments a lot but this is really interesting ^_^

first of all, I’m not picking sides here (if there are any)

second, the person who emailed this doesn’t deserve to be bashed this much. maybe that person didn’t think the email would’ve been offensive because to him maybe it doesn’t look like it. that person offended someone, yes, but it wasn’t exactly intensional. maybe if the person would just say sorry then the whole thing would be sort out.

third, for the person who emailed this, just try to understand that this thread was made to serve as a reminder for other people who does the same thing. maybe you do not deserve this but just take it as some bad luck that you had to be picked as the example and leave it at that. don’t mind the other bashings here, just as long as you clear things up with Silence everything would be ok.

fourth, Silence, it might be hard because of the other emails and all but try to give the person a little more slack. it wasn’t intentional anyway.

lastly, people on this thread, its not bad to give honest opinions but please try to understand both sides before making judgment. neither of them is at fault here and i think its only because of the excessive bashing and “uncalled for” comments that this is becoming a big issue.

    peace to everybody !! ^_^ V

Dude seriously, the guy was trying to help m33w out by possibly correcting mistakes to make the overall quality of the subs better. he just made a mistake and did not realize it was a different version of english is what was used. he did not deserve to be bashed at this magnitude or even at all.

making a thread like this was reasonable to make people aware that it was not a mistake, but others who bashed the dude for being stupid because he’s american was just uncalled for. (maybe youre the ones who are stupid and did not understand that he was just trying to help out)

the quality of the subs here has been pretty consistent, and of a decent level, so this guy can take a flying leap. I’m an American, and am constantly annoyed how people, software, etc frown upon the use of brittish English spelling. there are many many words that I honestly prefer spelling the non-american way.

but that’s not to say that I’m forgiving of spelling or grammar. using “there” in place of “their” or “they’re” makes me want to physically hurt someone. but using a valid spelling of a work of one of the many many versions of english dialects doesn’t bother me at all. (english is easily as confusing as japanese or spanish in their many dialects, if not moreso.)

One thing I’ve noticed that no fansubbing group actually does is using “If I were ” instead of “If I was “.
Your fansubs are some of the most accurate around, especially if you take into account the time it takes you to release them, so keep up the good job. (b’_’)b

OMFG, I can’t believe someone so dumb, as to not recognize that you are not misspelling, can actually act like they are so damn smart. Even if those were spelling mistakes that person should still keep his/her complaints to his/her-self. Morons like that person should be going around correcting people. It’s kinda pathetic and very annoying. You guys are awesome by the way. Thanks for everything.

  70. Now that you mention it I see the difference.
I hardly notice it because I’m confronted with both spellings all the time.
In school we learned the Britisch spelling(I’m from belgium) and on the internet allot of the time US spelling is used or even in fansubs or in TV shows.

Personally I don’t care even if there are small spelling or grammar mistakes. English isn’t my first language anyway and, it’s a fansub!, as long as the meaning of what was originally said is the same…, then it doesn’t matter for me.

If I wanted HQ I would buy it once licenced(I’m a student, so don’t have the $$). I’m very happy groups like this exists.

Get over yourself. We left Brittan long ago, and over the years our language changed. As do most languages if something similar happens.

Oh and just so you know. You were bash us Americans for not being able to spell. I just have to laugh. Here are a few misspelled words in your post.

    verson is actually version.
    bearly is actually barely.

So please don’t say such arrogant things to people is you are just as bad. Also I would have to say m.3.3.w FTW!!

Jesus, that was a complete dick. This is a free service – take what you get. I have been watching m33w releases since school days, and I have to say they are one of the best fansubs out there.

Your work is excellent, and as for the spelling, I really don’t care if the occasional word is misspelled, its a free service, which one I am ever so thankful that you provide (and I am sure that this little rant will have many spelling and grammar mistakes, like I care, its not a report I am handing in to work.)

I am trying not to pick sides, I am Canadian by the way, and we have a mix of British and American way of spelling. What I am really trying to say is this is a free service, if you do not like the way they are doing things, go somewhere else (or sub it yourself)

But picking on America just because of this one person’s opinion is wrong in my opinion. Perhaps m33w needs to be like dattebayo and just start banning people left and right – they seem to be very nice when I see all the when is the next episode blah blah blah crap in the chat.

Just be thankful that m33w has super fast releases, keep up the good work guys!

  76. Is it inappropriate for me to laughing my ass off right now? =P

Seriously, I never noticed anything he said until you posted this and even then I don’t give a fuck. In fact, even though I’m American, I often alternate between realize and realise when I’m typing and the same goes for things like cancelled and canceled.

there’s nothing wrong with mailing m33w and telling them about what you think was a mistake (even when it’s not), but that dictionary comment was downright insulting.

I don’t really understand why all the American hatred is amusing. I know what kind of reputation my country of origin has and the general perception of our current government, but if it’s alright with everyone I’d like to take a moment to just say ‘ouch’ for being called a ‘silly yank’, ‘arrogant’, ‘unintelligent’, and similar insults. It might seem funny at the time to take this e-mail and construe it as the attitude of 260 million people, but there are some of us, including myself, who feel hurt and stepped upon for being misconceived and assumed to be that way.

I would hope that in the time we live in, that everyone in the world would have the wisdom to look past where someone is born as a method of judging what their capabilities are and who they are inside. I am an American, but I am not stupid, I am not arrogant, and I am not an elitist.
