The main reason to drop support for xvid is because of the extra work required to maintain two versions. We've had many experiences in the past where one version turned out fine while another wasn't. Distribution and storage are also issues.

We feel that h264 alone now covers a large enough portion of our audience. Users viewing on mobile devices simply would have to either convert formats, or stream it from youtube. Users watching on HD televisions would likely want a higher quality version.

We are obviously aware of the numbers. In the past, the ratio of xvid to h264 downloads would be at least 70:30. It has however rapidly shifted in favour of h264. Also, please don't single us out in not offering an xvid version. You only need to check tokyotosho to see that the number of groups offering xvid versions have declined severely.

As I'm not part of the Working!! team, I have no say in what formats they choose to offer. However, I do find it unusual that a Standard Resolution version is not being offered. I am confident that the great majority of our users have devices which can play low-res h264. For high-res h264 though, I'm afraid we will be leaving a sizable minority to seek other alternatives.

Lastly, I would like to make it clear that we are not "We produce stuff that plays on 100% of things people want to watch it on subs". 70% is a number we can be satisfied with, however you're coming up with those ratios. And besides, there are kind freelancers out there who re-encode into low-res xvid.

Telling someone to watch something in flash compared to watching something standalone is the most laughable piece of shit I've heard yet in this seemingly neverending argument against XviD.

I think you're getting it backwards, like donkie says. Look at the goddamn numbers. You want to just force 25-30% of viewers to just find it "elsewhere"?

You're not doing fansubs that way. You're doing "my subs, which happen to play on 70% of things people want to watch on." Which that's fine if that's what you're aiming for, but please don't kid yourselves into believing you're gonna get help/praise/donations etc from those that truly need XviD. And please don't ever say you're doing this because you want to produce it so that others can see it in a widespread manner.

Thanks.

It is actually quite unavoidable that all videos would be encoded in h264 eventually. The fansub scene just tends to move quicker than others. Many other fansub groups have already phased out xvid versions years ago. M33W is actually one of the longest holdouts.

We do base our decision whether to include xvid by download ratio. The popularity of the xvid version has been steadily declining as more and more people upgrade their computers.

Unfortunately for your case donkie, not everyone can be supported, especially when you fall into tiny minority as others have upgraded to newer machines. It's just that we feel that 2010 is a good year to drop support for xvid as the we believe the great majority now have machines capable of playing HD h264.

For those who still can't play HD versions, just watch it on youtube or some similar service. You can boost the resolution to 480p to get a medium quality stream which would probably be the maximum an obsolete machine can handle anyway.

Funyuu~, just find a friend who can encode (or encode yourself), etc. etc. (if enough (like, 2 or 3) of people who matter ask me, I may make extra-low-quality xvids -- no promises though)

XVID isn't going back 20 years... It merely makes the show more available for those of us (I.E me) who can't afford a proper MKV running PC.

Making the show more accessible for others is moving forward. Giving lame excuses is moving backwards. (Please note, I am not trying to start a fight, I am merely stating facts.)

Just wondering, when you say no XVID, is that from now on for all your releases or just this release?

We'll take that on a case-by-case basis. This series will be all mkv though, as far as I know.
