Here is our new summer show, hope you enjoy. Also im going to say this now before the riots start. We used British English for this show since well it matches better and that’s what we chose to do, so dont hate, just watch.
And for those of you wondering, Anohana isnt dropped. Our TLC went to Japan so I had to find another one to do the last episode, which he is currently doing as we speak. So we are looking at finishing this in a day or two.
Read on if you’re interested in the latest in hipster encoding that can save you 100MB off the regular HD release size.
Encoder-kun’s Corner:
We’re adding another encode to the mix starting this season. In addition to the 720p and 480p (HD/SD) releases you’ve all grown accustomed to, we’re going to release an additional encode in what’s called “Hi10P”. The short version is that Hi10P is the exact same h.264 encoding you’ve seen before except it uses 10-bit precision internally instead of 8-bit. The result as far as we’re concerned is the same quality in a significantly smaller file (100MB smaller for episode 01).
You won’t be able to play this with your current media player so if you’re not interested in living (very) dangerously, stop here and go grab the regular HD/SD releases. These will continue to be released as normal and no, this new format won’t delay releases any more than they already are so really, there’s no disadvantage. A fellow named lachs0r has written a wall of text here (note: not m.3.3.w related) describing the details of 10-bit further, but I’ll just reproduce what you need if you want to give it a try:
- MPlayer2 (cross-platform, Windows builds at http://mplayer2.srsfckn.biz) You might want to use SMPlayer as GUI (http://smplayer.srsfckn.biz)
- VLC (cross-platform, use the nightly builds at http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/last/) Itβs not as bad as it used to be, seriously.
- CCCP Beta (http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/) Note that this is currently a CCCP exclusive feature, so you will not get this by simply installing the most recent ffdshow-tryouts.
I personally use mplayer2 for everything now but the choice is yours. Let me reiterate, the standard HD/SD releases are not going anywhere and no sacrifices will be made in their quality just for this. Think of this as a technology preview because once packages like CCCP and CoreAVC officially support it (both apparently very soon), you’ll be seeing a lot more of it. That’s all! Oh, and here’s the link to the release:
Enjoy!

I want to ask something about the 10 bit H264…Is there any minimum PC requirement to run that file?
It supposedly takes a little more CPU oomph than the standard HD release, sorry I don’t have a hard number but the Pentium Dual Core E2160 (a $70 cpu at the time) that I use on my HTPC has no issues with it – Encoder-kun

I support this choice in anime, many thanks for subbing this.
9:53 pm on July 19th, 2011
So now instead of just being an installer for various codecs and filters it’s now trying to become a codec itself? Wtf mate.
10:00 pm on July 19th, 2011
I’ve already installed K-lite codec pack on my laptop here…so, to play the new codec there I just need to install the mplayer2 and play the file isn’t it?There won’t be any effect to my computer right?thanks for the release by the way..:p
10:02 pm on July 19th, 2011
nice to see m33w back to subbing again.

The colours that you see are going to be all wrong. There will be purple splotches in the video area.

m.3.3.w: Ahead of the game ™
*thumbs up* for subbing this series and for giving us greater quality and less filesize! π
10:20 pm on July 19th, 2011
Oh, and it plays great on the July 15 beta version of CCCP. π
10:41 pm on July 19th, 2011
Im not even on the beta and coreavc icon is there, all is fine
10:43 pm on July 19th, 2011
Color is fine. dunno why
10:47 pm on July 19th, 2011
okay nvm after watching for 1 minutes I see artefacts. cccp beta then
12:00 am on July 20th, 2011
Hmm, no seeds on the SD it looks like? Everyone stuck at just under 2%.
12:05 am on July 20th, 2011
I downloaded all three programs, but none of them work the way I want. MPlayer2 doesn’t let you skip to the time you want. VLC still shows the purple stuff. As for CCCP, what do I do? I played it using the mpc-hc that it installed for me, but it doesn’t work.
12:08 am on July 20th, 2011
Oh, and one more thing. I’ve never watched a m.3.3.w release before, and this is awesome! It’s way better than Commie’s.

I prefer UMPlayer.

@shirayuki75
im trying vlc cause they say that is no bad, and indeed the video looks good, the cache build for the font still is slowwwww but now vlc looks a little better.

Putting aside the issue of file size for a moment, will any of us actually see much improvement from 10-bit h264? True 10-bit colour depth is only used in high-end graphics monitors, and many of those that claim to display 1 billion colours are still 8-bit with frame rate control (FRC).
Iβm pretty sure that most of us will have 6-bit+FRC panels, allowing 16 million colours to be simulated, with only a few using true 8-bit and fewer still with 10-bit.
2:07 am on July 20th, 2011
Fixed your SD problem <_<
also VLC was never good.
Been using SMPlayer, MPC-HC and VLC back to back for over four years now…
I only use MPC-HC for GPU acceleration and playing stuff that stutters/lags otherwise.
sorry about the SD seeding problem… Evidently Distro-kun is a fuckwit and doesn’t know how to seed correctly.
2:36 am on July 20th, 2011
Wow, so you’re the first group who’re using Hi10P encode to the actual release… 2-thumbs up!
Also, Dantalian is a great choice! So 4-thumbs up!
2:50 am on July 20th, 2011
@blah
CCCP isn’t really “trying to be a codec.” They’ve simply modified ffdshow to be capable of decoding 10bit x264.
@kojika
The general gist is: 10bit offers an improvement because the larger colourspace allows videos to be compressed more without losing quality – hence the smaller filesizes. Your monitors color depth is pretty irrelevant.
Here’s a more technical explanation:

avira insist that the mplayer.exe from the link has “TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen3 [trojan]” anyone has this problems with other antivirus?
5:41 am on July 20th, 2011
@ Leg
My comment was actually more to do with the possibility of reducing compression artifacts, such as banding. The suggestion being that the true potential of 10-bit encoding will not be fully realized until monitors are capable of displaying a greater palette of colours.
Changing the subject … it’s good to see m.3.3.w picking up a summer show. Episode 01 seems promising, although there was one minor nit-pick at 07:03 π
“Fried bread is always been eaten…”
Possible alternatives are:
“…has always been eaten…”
“…is always eaten…”
“…should always be eaten…”
It was “…has always been eaten…” right up until someone applied a QC report at the very last minute without actually reading what they had changed it to – JJS

Good release, but I think you’re missing a line around the twenty first minute. It’s where she explains about pop-up books.
Yeah, for some reason, Robert Sayer’s name didn’t get included. I blame the jews. However, it seems that’s the only thing about that line that was left out. (still not enough for a v2, though)

Which link, Black Dalek? I installed the CCCP beta and didn’t get any warning from my MSE.
2:28 pm on July 20th, 2011
@kojika
You’re right, but you originally asked “will any of us actually see much improvement from 10-bit h264”, and the answer is yes. Even without 10 bit (or higher) monitors, there will still be improvements in banding and compression artifacts.
2:36 pm on July 20th, 2011
…thank you for this show. Finally a quality release worth archiving.
2:49 pm on July 20th, 2011
Yep, you don’t require an 10-bit monitor to see all the differences. For example I made a test encode of one random anime episode which had banding in beginning of it, I encoded it in 8-bit and in 10-bit both at the same settings and the 10-bit encoding looked ALOT better in some places, it didn’t have as much banding and the filesize was smaller even if the settings were the same.
here’s a screenshot comparison of it: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/68057
btw I took the screenshots in fullscreen on purpose so that you’d see the difference well.
but yeah, the difference is clear, I just love Hi10P^^

8:26 pm on July 20th, 2011
hmm… do the latest ffdshow-tryouts support 10bit? if so, i have nothing to worry about
9:09 pm on July 20th, 2011
@ShadowVlican No, they don’t. CCCP has magic patched ffdshow.
9:24 pm on July 20th, 2011
Excuse the double post, but:
@Black Dalek That “virus” warning is a false positive, triggered by the packing of the executable. You shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Here’s a Virustotal report of the file: http://www.virustotal.com/file-scan/report.html?id=a62f25a12f57e9e3ab3031d44740c844778881dca3e87c8ba99756ebb2b000f8-1311208598

11:39 pm on July 20th, 2011
can 1 play your Hi10P with coreAVC 2.5.5? i love coreAVC btw.
thanks
12:03 am on July 21st, 2011
@anon123
Negative. Supposedly CoreAVC will eventually add 10bit support, but it hasn’t been yet.
2:13 am on July 21st, 2011
CoreCodec say that CoreAVC 3.0, with 10-bit support, should be released around the end of August.

its wokr for me..

After reading all this and the thread on Doki subs , I am wondering this:
How high can the CRF be cranked up to in 10 bit to achieve a file that’s equal in size to the 8 bit version?
Pleading to the M33w encoder to do it as a test.
Better yet , if time permits calculate average bitrate of the 8 bit release , and do a 3 or 4 pass encode in Hi10p too.
5:56 pm on July 21st, 2011
apparently if you’re on linux you can just play the hi10 without issues. might as well anyway, since it’s smaller, but it wont play right on your phones/other players
2:42 am on July 22nd, 2011
Just out of curiousity, what was the reasoning behind the naming of the Heaven in the Pot? I’m not complaining, just curious. I know Commie used “world inside the gourd” which is a rather well known story (whether its correct or not I don’t know. Hahaha hence I watch fansubs)
3:08 am on July 22nd, 2011
It’s great that you experiment with new stuff. Just one thing, after all this work on video side of things – don’t throw audio some silly 2.0 flac stereo after that. That would be just idiotic (and sadly most if not all other groups have succumbed to that …).
5:46 pm on July 22nd, 2011
NIGGA try on some 64-bit! Saved ANOTHER 100MB!

@edward: not entirely true, I had to update ffmpeg to 0.8 series first to get mplayer2 play it… I’m not sure how many distros have this – it’s not ABI compatible with 0.7 and loads of stuff still don’t build with it…
4:38 am on July 23rd, 2011
If anybody uses PotPlayer and you have noise problems with the 10 bit version just update to the newest (1.5.29120), it was fixed in 1.5.29063.
5:47 am on July 24th, 2011
I believe there is a great PotPlayer build with madvr + lavfilters that supports hi10p.

@kojika
Well, if you are aware of “being eaten”, then you may remux the episode.
I did that after reading your post, thanks for that.
12:08 pm on July 26th, 2011
Besides i never downloaded a better translation of an anime.
I want to say, your choice to translate in the “old fine english way” was the best choice for this show.
I give 5 stars…

Did you guys drop this? Dantalian eps 2 and 3 have already aired….
